We Fled Fires

Where were you the day we fled
From the fires in our homes?

Melted dreams and smoky hope
Were all that our hearts could hold;
We sought you among the flames,
Called your name with growing pain.

Where were you the day we fled
From the fires that we made?

Tumbling walls and falling doors
Marked the hours, sung the score;
We stood by our shadows bright,
Keeping watch through bitter night.

Where were you the day we fled
From the fires in our sight?

Countless stars and looming trees
Hung above us, heard our pleas;
We bowed down to Nature’s wrath,
Chanting hymns as sadness passed.

Where were you the day we fled
From the fires of our pasts?

Morning rose with us aghast
By the glowing aftermath;
We set out from our burnt loams,
From the fires of our homes.
